Steve Brooks To Perform Week of Oct. 24

Steve Brooks.

Cross two famous guys named Brooks - Garth and Mel - and you get Austin folksinger Steve Brooks. He has a song for every occasion and his tunes range from comic commentary and cracker barrel philosophy to lyrical love ballads and sharp-edged snapshots of Texas and the world. His Waltz Across Texas program is suited for all ages and presents Texas as a “whole lot bigger than honky-tonks and cowboy hats.”  He’ll take listeners on a musical vacation across the cultures of Texas and great artists like Ernest Tubb, Freddy Fender, Cindy Walker, Mary Robbins, T-Bone Walker and Leadbelly.

Brooks is best-known for writing a song-a-week for Jim Hightower’s radio show.  His work has been recorded by artists like Russell Crowe, Albert & Gage and Slaid Cleaves, who calls him, “A great unsung songwriter of Austin.”  He’s had music in two films and appeared in two more, including the 2004 release “Barbecue: A Texas Love Story.”

Brooks’ tour in Montgomery County will start on Monday, October 24 at the Coffeyville Meal Site, Sycamore Landing and Windsor Place Assisted Living before arriving at the Spencer/Rounds Theatre on the CCC Campus at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, October 25. Brooks will continue his tour of Coffeyville with Windsor Place, Windsor Place SCU and the Medicalodge of Coffeyville on Tuesday.  Wednesday he will entertain residents at Asbury Village and Manor House followed by the students at Caney Valley High School on Thursday and the Caney Nursing Home and Guest Home Estates in Caney on Friday.

The public is invited to the 10:20 a.m. Tuesday humanities performances at CCC. The performances are free and held in the Spencer/Rounds Theatre.  For more information call 620-251-7700, ext. 2145 or 2038.
