Larry Carter Tours Coffeyville Week of Nov. 10th for CCC Humanities Series

Larry Carter returns to his hometown of Coffeyville the week of Nov. 10th as part of the Coffeyville Community College Humanities Project.

Carter will be combining original music and storytelling with one of the best known of all folk tales, The Pied Piper of Hamelin.  “We tend to think of this as a simple children’s story, but the version people know was written by one of the greatest of all English poets, Robert Browning,” said Carter.  “For that reason alone, the story is worthy of revisiting.”

For the assisted living centers, Carter will be leading sing-alongs of old favorites like “Moonlight Bay,” “Home on the Range,” “Down By The Old Mill Stream,” and other well-known golden oldies.  “I’ll provide songbooks,” he said, “and everyone knows how the melodies go, so it is great fun.”

Carter is a product of Coffeyville public schools, kindergarten through CCC, including winning the National Debate Championship for community colleges with his partner in 1970. He was one of the former residents profiled in the 2006 booklet Who Walked These Trails? by the Night Writers chapter of the Kansas Authors Club.  He is a four-time Kansas Folk Instrument Champion, most recently in 2010, and has twice performed concerts at CCC with his Celtic music bands.

Carter's tour in Montgomery County will start on Monday, Nov. 10th at Sycamore Landing and Windsor Place Assisted Living before arriving at the Spencer/Rounds Theatre on the CCC Campus at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11th. Carter will continue his tour of Coffeyville with Windsor Place, Windsor Place SCU and the Medicalodge of Coffeyville on Tuesday afternoon.  Wednesday, Nov 12th, he will entertain residents at Pickwick Place and Asbury Village followed by the students at Caney Valley High School on Thursday, Nov. 13th, and the Caney Nursing Center and Guest Home Estates in Caney on Friday, Nov. 14th.

The public is invited to the 10:30 a.m. Tuesday humanities performances at CCC.  The performances are free and held in the Spencer/Rounds Theatre.  For more information call 620-251-7700 ext. 2145 or 2038.
