Hailing from her Potawatomi and Cherokee country home in Oklahoma and now living in Kansas, Elexa Dawson’s red-dirt honey vocals and rhythmic guitar style deliver a sound that hits home in every state. Both familiar and intriguing, her songs speak of the earth and community, and celebrate all relationships from mother and child to friend and lover. Her hopeful messages cut through the mundane without sidestepping pain.
In late 2019, her “Music is Medicine” CD introduced Elexa as a solo artist, after being long recognized as the lead songwriter for Weda Skirts. The CD was recognized as the Best Country Recording in the 2022 Native American Music Awards.
Elexa is a Mid-America Arts Alliance Artist Leadership Fellow, and in 2021, she was a New Song Showcase Winner at the Walnut Valley Festival.
Elexa’s second cd, “Wanderlust,” a mindfully experimental collaborative album with the Oklahoma-based band Stanley Hotel, soared to #11 on the FAI Folk Chart in January before its February 2, 2024 release. Singles “Sweet Sisters” (an anthem for earth lovers) and “Answer” (ancestrally channeled folk rock) showcase the range of texture and mood achieved by this alchemic collection.
