Kansas City folk duo Betse & Clarke will present “Traveling Music," a musical and cultural heritage program exploring American folk music at CCC on Nov. 1.
Songs and tunes helped early immigrants to the United States to preserve their heritage and family stories. The generations following continued to keep the music in the family and community — but in recent decades, things have changed. The duo shares stories detailing the roots of certain songs and tunes, ways they have changed throughout the years, and what we might glean from them today. Some songs can be traced directly to centuries-old ballads from the British Isles.
Fiddle tunes such as the popular “8th of January” have historical significance and variations that were popularized in later decades. The program includes familiar songs such as “Keep on the Sunny Side,” chosen to encourage participation particularly in care facilities, as well as offer insight to college and high school students in appreciation of preceding generations.
Betse & Clarke will be performing on the CCC campus on Tuesday, November 1. The public is invited to the 10:30 a.m. Tuesday humanities performances at CCC. The performances are free and held in the Spencer/Rounds Theatre.
