Members of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Coffeyville Community College took part in The University of Tulsa’s Presidential Lecture Series on Thursday evening, February 2, in the Gussman Concert Hall of the Lorton Performance Center. The featured speaker was George Will, a Pulitzer Prize winner and Newsweek essayist and one of the country’s most widely read political columnist. His popular twice-weekly column for the Washington Post syndicate reaches nearly 500 newspapers throughout the United States and Europe and he appears regularly on ABC’s This Week. Will is a prolific author with books ranging from "The Woven Figure" to "Bunts" to his latest, "One Man’s America." Will spoke to an over-flow audience at the Tulsa lecture where he presented an incisive commentary on the Washington political scene and offered a glimpse into what the future holds for public affairs, public policy and American society. Will reminded the audience that “Democracy may truly only happen under necessity…democracy isn’t always pretty but necessary.” He left the audience on a positive note with a belief in the strength and resiliency of the American people.
The lecture was sponsored by The Darcy O’Brien Endowed Chair, a Visiting Scholars Program. It was established in 1999 to bring to the Tulsa University Campus distinguished scholars in English, law, religion, science, or other disciplines compatible with the legacy of Darcy O’Brien, Tulsa University writer, scholar, and teacher.
Phi Theta Kappa members attending the lecture were: Hannah Potter, Bryant Traxson, Xavier N’Gouan, Kacie Serrault, Aaron Neely, Melissa Morgan, Wes Burdiek, Cecilia Kamau, and Kyle Darnell. The next Tulsa University Presidential Lecture Series will be March 27 with speakers Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.
