Officers of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Coffeyville Community College traveled to Tulsa Saturday, September 20, to participate in the Mini Laps event at The Little Light House, a long-time chapter service partner. The Little Light House is a Christian Developmental Center that provides educational and therapeutic services in a Christ-Centered environment to children with special needs since 1972. Children from the Coffeyville area have been students at the school. Children attending the school are from birth to age six with developmental delays as a result of physical or mental challenging conditions. Some of these conditions include Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Downs Syndrome, Autism, visual and hearing impairments. Children from all races and religious backgrounds are welcomed at The Little Light House.
Mini-Laps is one of four major annual fundraising events that raise approximately 40% of the funds needed to support the school. Other events include the Garden Party, Links for Little Ones, and Laps for Little Ones. The Coffeyville students enjoyed the carnival like atmosphere of The Little Light House grounds while visiting the various booths and exhibitors. At 11:00 a.m., each of the children attending the school, took their turn on the mini track. Theme for the event was Rock and Roll Music as children were dressed as music stars while their wheel-chair or walker was decorated as a float.
While at the event, the Eta Gamma members assisted Marj Satterfield of Glad Wags, trainer of the chapter’s service dog, Abby. The dog will be presented to the children of The Little Light House in December. Group pictures were made with Abby and also with Mrs. America, a guest at the event. Abby was later presented at the September Coffeyville Community College Board of Trustees Meeting and the general membership meeting of the Eta Gamma Chapter.
Attending the mini-laps event were Treg Easley, Danika Burton, Dominique Liddell, Trae Venerable, Barbara Palmer, Jesus Medina, Sang Pierre Gomez, Heather Rogers and advisor Linda McFate.
