Officers from the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Coffeyville Community College participated in the Color Run 5K in downtown Lawrence on September 14. The Color Run, also known as the Happiest 5K on the Planet, is a unique race that celebrates healthiness, happiness, and individuality. The Eta Gamma members participated as part of the Kansas Region Team that also included the region’s mascot, Channing Chant Bear, a stuffed bear awarded annually to the chapter demonstrating the most pep and enthusiasm at chapter roll call at region convention.
This year, the Lawrence Color Run benefitted Van Go, Inc., an arts based social service agency that provides year-round after-school and summer job-training programs to high-needs and under-served youth, ages 14-21. Using art as the vehicle, Van Go delivers constructive activities to youth at risk for drug and alcohol use, teen pregnancy, truancy or delinquency. Founded in 1997 as an innovative way to help fill existing gaps in social services, Van Go has been a lifeline for hundreds of kids and teens in crisis, providing them with valuable life and job skills as they create art for the community.
Following the Color Run, the Eta Gamma members attended the Renaissance Festival in Kansas City. The CCC students were the guests of Terry Helmich, Advisor of the Alpha Iota Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Johnson County Community College on Friday night before the Color Run. Participating in the week-end events were Eta Gamma President Eric Mueller and Vice Presidents Brianna Spence and Bethany Acridge and Relay For Life Chairman Darah Sherwood.
