City of Columbus officials along with Coffeyville Community College, Columbus Tech Construction and Welding programs gathered at Telephone Park for the dedication of the newly constructed gazebo. The new gazebo was built by Columbus students. The park’s previous gazebo was destroyed by a storm with 100 mile per hour winds two years ago, damaging the centerpiece beyond repair.
“The project could not have been accomplished without the partnership we formed with the College and because of this success, we are building a relationship that is allowing us to do other projects to benefit our city and its residents," said Mayor Marie Nepple.
Construction instructor Kevin Hunt stated that the students used a variety of skills on the project. "This was a very comprehensive project which required a lot of mathematical knowledge cutting every angle and bevel," said Hunt.
The Welding students also learned new skills. "We fabricated the steel in our shop and welded them together at the site," Todd Madl, Welding instructor said.
The CCC instructors feel this was a unique learning experience. The quality of the workmanship and the completion of the project on time led the City to contact the CCC Construction program with a new community service project building new restrooms at the City Park.
