Darrell Mullinax, aka The Smokin Gunn, is a musician who hails from Independence, Kansas and grew up in Oklahoma. He studied woodwinds at Washburn University in Topeka. He has played guitar many moons and is an avid fan of the banjo, mandolin and flute.
His musical interests include folk, blues, historical ballads, 60’s and 70’s tunes as well as ragtime “finger pickin.” The movie "The Sting" introduced Mullinax to Scott Joplin ragtime, which is the inspiration for Mullinax’s show. Joplin and a few others had a syncopated style called ragtime that stirred a new century before the Great War and ushered in jazz and blues of the Roaring Twenties. Mullinax will be playing a few of Joplin’s tunes as well as some originals and discussing the life and times of Joplin.
