The Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Coffeyville Community College has selected its officers for the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters. Caitlin Hollinger, a member of the CCC women’s soccer team from Wichita, will lead the chapter as president. Hannah Potter from Cheney, Kansas, will serve as Vice President of Scholarship. She will chair the chapter’s Honors In Action Project which will focus upon a comparative study of educational issues within the over-all topic of Democratization of Information: Power, Peril and Promise. Melissa Morgan of Topeka and Wes Burdiek from Silver Lake, Kansas, will serve a Co-Vice President of Service. The Chapter’s many service projects include recycling materials for the Little Light House in Tulsa, assisting with projects at the Brown Mansion, Operation Christmas Child, Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat, Salvation Army holiday baskets, and Project Graduation. The chapter recently sent four large boxes of school supplies to a school in the Kyrgyz Republic of Central Asia.
Coffeyville native LaToya Johnson provides leadership to the chapter’s activities of the Fellowship Hallmark such as dinners, movie nights, and the annual trip to Oklahoma State University for the OSU Homecoming Walk-Around. International students Muhammed Sannoh and Xavier N’Gouan serve as co-vice presidents of chapter communication. They are in charge of updating the group e-mail list, Facebook page, and website, poster announcements of chapter events, videotaping, and chapter newsletter. Stephanie Miller of Independence serves Eta Gamma as secretary while Tyler Sprague of Independence and James Deckard of Wichita share the treasurer and fundraising position. Fundraising projects to date for the chapter include cleaning the fairgrounds during the inter-state fair and rodeo, a Better World Books drive, selling Raven Gear at the first home football game, and cleaning Veterans Memorial Stadium. Fundraising will continue throughout the school year to finance chapter participation at region and international events.
Alexandria Black will serve as chapter Relay For Life Chairman. Fundraising activities include such things as Ravens For a Cure and chicken and noodle luncheons. Cecilia Kamau will serve as the International Students Representative to the executive board. She also serves as a tutor in the college’s Student Success Center. Chapter advisor is Linda McFate, Kansas Region Coordinator is Tammy Fuentez of Labette County Community College, and Luke Davis of Jackson, Mississippi, is the Chapter Relations Manager and contact with International Headquarters.
