Dr. Terry D. Powell will receive the Distinguished Alumni and Friends Award from Coffeyville Community College on October 24, at the College’s annual Distinguished Alumni and Friends noon luncheon.
Dr. Powell was born and raised in Coffeyville. He graduated from Coffeyville Community College in 1962 with a 4.0 GPA. Dr. Powell then attended the University of Kansas and KU Medical School. After a year-long internship, he served a residency in Radiation Oncology, plus a one-year fellowship. Dr. Powell then served two years as a Major at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center during the Vietnam War, where he ran the radiation oncology program.
Dr. Powell served one year as an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico and was associated with the pi meson accelerator at Los Alamos National Laboratory, testing medical applications of the accelerator for treatment of cancer. After a year in a busy radiation oncology practice in California, Dr. Powell returned to the Tulsa area where he served as medical director of radiation oncology at both Hillcrest and Tulsa Regional Hospitals.
While working in Tulsa, Dr. Powell participated in the development of a cancer program at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. With Dr. Powell at the helm, the program soon gained accreditation by the American College of Surgeons. For more than 30 years, Dr. Terry Powell commuted weekly from Tulsa to Coffeyville to treat patients.
