Coffeyville Community College Native American Leadership program will sponsor “Rally in the Valley,” a youth competition and intertribal powwow, on Saturday March 29. The head staff includes Master of Ceremonies, Titus Frenchman; Head Singer, Russell Mashunkashey; Head Man, Cricket Rice.; Head Lady, Janee Gabbard; Head Boy, Daniel “Pat ko shuk” Mitchell-Alvarado; Head Girl, Brennah Wahweotten; and Arena Director, Walter Dye.
Doors open to the public at noon. The event will be held in the Nellis West Gym on the CCC main campus. The youth competition Grand Entry will begin at 1 p.m. During the youth competition, students from various schools will compete individually and as a team. At 4:30 p.m., a hand drum competition will be held with a $200 cash prize. Gourd Dancing will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by the adult grand entry. There will be men’s and women’s contests.
Daniel “Pat ko shuk” Mitchell-Alvarado has been chosen to serve as the Head Boy. He is the 13-year-old son of Martie Mitchell and the grandson of Gary and Voncile Mitchell. Pat do shuk is in the 7th grade at Royal Valley Middle School. He plays football and basketball and enjoys sports in general. He has danced for several years with the Royal Valley Singers and Dancers. He enjoys dancing at powwows. He was honored to give the invocation in the Potawatomi language at a Fort Leavenworth cultural event. He continues to learn more about his culture, religion and language. This will be his second time to serve as Head Boy at the Ralley in the Valley event.
Brennah Wahweotten will serve as the Head Girl this year. She is a junior at Royal Valley High School and has been a member of the Royal Valley Native American Dancers and Singers since Kindergarten. She has attended many powwows Nationwide and looks forward to serving this year.
