Cassie Wesson, a sophomore from Leavenworth, Kan., placed fourth individually at the 2014 Kansas Academic Excellence Challenge State Championship on April 3-4. The tournament was held at Kansas State University-Salina.
Wesson answered 38 toss-up questions in eight rounds. Her 39.58 points per 20 toss-up questions placed her as the fourth highest scoring individual in the tournament.
As a team, the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens team placed in a seventh place tie. The Ravens beat Dodge City in their first match of the tournament, 240-180. The Ravens won their final match of the event by defeating Kansas City 330-60. In between, the Ravens fell victim to slow buzzers and tough competition in losing six matches in a row to Cowley, Neosho County, Johnson County, Garden City, Allen, and Cloud County.
Other CCC students competing at state tournament included John Clemons, freshman from Amoret, Mo., Ethan Logan, sophomore from Coffeyville, Dallas Maddox, freshman from Silver Lake, Kan., Austin Smith, freshman from Coffeyville, and Allyson Walker, freshman from Lindsborg, Kan.
The CCC Quiz Bowl team competes across Kansas in a variety of tournaments throughout the school year. Quiz tournament formats include NAQT and the Kansas Academic Excellence Challenge format, based closely on the NAQT format. CCC has won three KAEC state championships: 1986, 1991, and 1993.
Any CCC student is eligible to participate. To participate in inter-collegiate competitions, students must be enrolled in six hours in the semester participating and have no more than 72 earned total hours in their college career. A 2.0 career grade point average or above is also required.
