The Coffeyville Community College quiz bowl team placed third at the National Association of Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Sectional this past weekend in Concordia, Kan. CCC competed against seven other community colleges for an opportunity to qualify for the NAQT National Tournament next month in Orlando, Fla.
CCC started tournament play by winning three matches in a row. CCC defeated Hutchinson, Johnson County and Garden City.
After their hot start, Coffeyville dropped consecutive matches to Allen County and Dodge City before winning their last two round robin matches against Cowley and Cloud County.
Four teams tied for first with 5-2 records after the round robin was completed. In additional to Coffeyville, Garden City, Allen County and Johnson County each had 5-2 records. A four-team playoff was held to determine the winner with Coffeyville and Johnson County matched up in the first game. However, in this go-around, Johnson County would defeat Coffeyville. Coffeyville then staved off playoff elimination by defeating Allen County and then faced Garden City for a chance to play back into the championship game. Garden City, though, defeated Coffeyville. Garden City would play Johnson County for the sectional championship with Johnson County prevailing.
