The Coffeyville Community College quiz bowl team finished in fifth place the State Academic Challenge Tournament on April 27-28. Kansas State University-Salina hosted the state tournament this year. Coffeyville competed against ten other Kansas community colleges and a total of 49 students participated.
Coffeyville's Donald Houston was fourth individual medalist at the tournament. In eight games, Houston answered 35 toss-up questions for an average of 4.4 per game. James Deckard placed 11th individually, answering 32 toss-up questions in nine games. Austin Baughman was 20th individually with 16 toss-up questions answered correctly over seven games. Each round at the state tournament consists of 24 toss-up questions across every conceivable academic and current event category with bonuses awarded to the team that answers the toss-up correctly.
Also competing for Coffeyville were Kyle Lindgren, Michael Abbott, Kyle Darnell and Zach McClenning.
As a team, Coffeyville finished with a 6-4 record. The tournament got off to a rough start as Coffeyville loss four of their first five games. Coffeyville then got on a roll and won five straight matches defeating Dodge City, Cloud County, Cowley, Johnson County and Hutchinson to finish with a winning record.
Garden City won the tournament with Hutchinson placing second. Kansas City was third and Allen County fourth. Behind Coffeyville in fifth place were Dodge City, Cowley, Colby, Neosho County, Cloud County and Johnson County.
