Twenty-two members of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Coffeyville Community College were among the 803 volunteers that assisted with the Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic in Independence April 16-17. According to Greg Hill, Executive Director of the Kansas Dental Foundation from Topeka, “109 dentists were registered for the project with one dentist registered from as far away as California.” For some dentists new to the project, they were here to learn the process. Approximately 1,200 to 1,300 people contributed to the project. While Independence has been the smallest Kansas town to host a Mission of Mercy Free Dental Clinic, over one million dollars in free dental services were provided to over 1,500 clients. Don Farthing and Cindi Sherwood, local co-chairmen of the project, stated,” we cannot say enough about the value of the assistance provided by our volunteers. They were incredible.” According to Executive Director Hill, the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation has provided nearly 8½ million dollars in free care to nearly 19,000 patients since the foundation’s inception in 2003. The foundation sponsors one free dental clinic yearly. The Eta Gamma Chapter participated as a part of Kansas Corps. Leah Nookes, Kansas Corps State Coordinator, worked with the CCC students on their service project. Assisting with the Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic were the following Eta Gamma members: Jeff McCloud, David Cornett, Yusif Abudu, Emily Seda, Jasmere Love, Shari Blecha, Andrea Hamersky, Shelby Hanigan, Jessica Pirkey, Kathryn Cure, Tristan Zavada, Becca George, Leslee Kesterson, Falicia Mansfield, Jacob Asbridge, Phil Morris, Wayne Chism, Linda McFate, Nayshona Jones, Johannes Muller, Tori Smart, and William Fulls.
