The Coffeyville Red Ravens have earned a spot at the NAQT Community College Championship Tournament after taking second at the NAQT sectional held on Jan. 20 at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan. The Ravens finished the tournament with a 7-2 record, second to only Redlands (Okla.) Community College (8-1). The NAQT Community College Championship Tournament will be March 2-3 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, Ill., a suburb just outside Chicago.
Coffeyville started the sectional tournament with six straight wins. They suffered their first loss of the day by dropping a match to the Redlands "A" team. Coffeyville bounced back by defeating Johnson County before facing the Redlands "A" team a second time in the sectional finals. Redlands defeated the Ravens to claim the sectional championship.
“They are very diverse in their knowledge which makes them a good team and not a one man show," said CCC quiz bowl coach Tamika Harrell. The Red Ravens practice three to five hours a week with a coach and additional hours on their own.
Sophomore Karl Wittenburg was the third individual medalist at the sectional. Wittenburg answered 36 toss-up questions over nine matches and tallied 51.63 points per 20 toss-up questions heard. Sophomore Isaiah Evensvold was ninth individually with 19 toss-up questions answered over nine matches with an average of 24.84 points per 20 toss-ups.
In addition to the NAQT Community College Championship Tournament, Coffeyville will be defending their state title on April 6-7 at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.
