Members of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Coffeyville Community College participated in the Kansas/Nebraska Region Honors in Action Conference held November 3-5 in Junction City. The chapter placed first runner-up in the region's annual scholar bowl, losing by two questions to a team from Kansas City Kansas Community College. In addition to the scholar bowl, the conference featured general sessions, seminar discussion groups, a region dance, and a college fair featuring several institutions.
Motivational speakers keynoted the conference. Chiquita Miller, K-State Research and Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent from Kansas City addressed, "Family Traditions Over the Years." Keynoting Saturday morning's general session was Mike Diebeck whose topic was, "Responsibility: A Call for Courage." Former Phi Theta Kappa International Vice President Carlos Acevedo shared thoughts regarding, "Why Embrace Phi Theta Kappa?" and "Completing Your Degree(s) and Beyond." "The Power of Empathy" was the topic selected by Matt and Joehey CiCi from the Minnesota/Wisconsin Regions.
A region business meeting and break-out sessions completed the conference. Attending from Coffeyville Community College were members and alums Melissa Loibel, Wesley Merritt, Jesus Medina, Kenny Dodson, Harlene Alford, Kendall Blaich, Caitlynn Stevensen, Sayo Niiyama and adviser Linda McFate.
