The Coffeyville Community College quiz bowl team opened the 2017-2018 campaign by winning the Neosho County Invitational on Oct. 14 in Chanute, Kan. The defending Kansas Academic Excellence Challenge Champions won all four matches by a combined tally of 1,980 to 330.
Coffeyville opened the tournament with a 340 to 140 victory over Johnson County. Coffeyville then defeated the Cowley "C" team by a score of 560 to 110 before upending the Cowley "A" squad 500 to 50. Coffeyville finished the opening tournament with a 580 to 30 win over the Neosho County "B" team.
Karl Wittenburg was the leading individual performer for Coffeyville. Wittenburg answered 36 toss-up questions over the four rounds played. Teammates Isaiah Evensvold and Dylon Villines answered 13 toss-ups each while Hannah Chrisman was the first correct answer on three toss-ups.
Coffeyville's next match will be Dec. 2 at the Cowley Snow Bowl in Arkansas City, Kan.
