Coffeyville Community College will launch their Fire Science Program this summer. With the help of Chief James Grimmett as the Primary Instructor, Fire Fighter I will kick off on July 2nd.
Fire Fighter I will run online July 2-July 27. The course will conclude with a two week academy July 30-August 10. The academy will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at the CCC Technical Campus. Housing is available for those who request it.
Students will have the opportunity to earn their Associate Degree of Applied Fire Science as well. This is a two year instructional program designed to prepare graduates for entry-level firefighter positions with various emergency organizations, including fire departments, industry emergency response teams, and first responder agencies.
“What we are offering is an innovative approach to a Fire Science degree that is a first in the State of Kansas,” said Chief Grimmett. “We can help prepare those prospective firefighters as they will face keen competition for available job openings.”
The program allows students to complete the International Fire Science Training Association (IFSTA) Firefighter I and II certifications, complete an Associate Degree, and prepare for transfer to a bachelor degree program at an area university. This program is designed to prepare students for careers in firefighting, fire investigation, consulting, industrial safety, fire engineering, and fire prevention.
“Many people are attracted to firefighting because it is challenging and provides the opportunity to perform an essential public service,” said Grimmett. “The number of qualified applicants in most areas exceeds the number of job openings. This situation is expected to persist in coming years. Those who have completed some fire fighter education at a community college will have an additional advantage.”
Course work for the Associate Degree of Applied Fire Science will begin on August 14th. Students enrolled in this program may be eligible for financial aid if they qualify. Classes will be online and evenings. This class does have a maximum capacity of 20 students, so inquire today.
