Derek
Dick named Red Raven Employee of the Month
Coffeyville Community College (CCC)
Horticulture/Agriculture Instructor and Grounds Superintendant, Derek
Dick has been named the Red Raven Employee of the Month.
This is Dick’s seventh year of working at CCC. He
graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in
Animal Science/Vet Medicine and then a second time with a master’s
degree in Agriculture Education. He teaches 26 credit hours a year in
subjects such as horticulture science, soil science, agriculture in our
society and entomology. He is also the division chair for the
horticulture department.
“I enjoy the interaction with the students and
seeing what they can accomplish,” said Dick. “I enjoy shaping them into
young adults.”
In 2007, Dick took on the additional job of CCC
Grounds Superintendent. His students have taken an active role in the
changes happening around campus as they have designed and implemented
all of the flowerbed changes. In addition to the new flower beds, all
of the athletic fields have had major improvements (with help from the
coaches), new trash cans have been added and more.
“The big thing is improving the image of the main
campus as a recruiting tool,” said Dick. “My goal is to make the campus
a public place where people will want to come and walk around and hang
out. I enjoy the challenge of the grounds job and it is fun to see the
changes.”
Dick lives on a ranch near Nowata, Okla. with his
wife, Tenae and two-year-old son Travis. The couple is expecting their
second child in February.
