Coffeyville Community College (CCC) is expanding its technical program offering in the Columbus area. The College is gearing up to build a new 10,128 sq ft training facility. This industrial training facility will allow CCC to bring Welding Technology training to the area workforce for the Fall 2009 semester. The Construction Technology program is also being expanded to add cabinet making to the current curriculum. Construction will begin this fall on property west of the Cherokee County Ambulance building. The facility will contain separate shop and classroom training areas for both Welding and Construction Technology.

In support of this $903,000 project, CCC as received an Investment Assistance Grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) in the amount of $451,500. The EDA’s mission is to promote innovation and competitiveness by supporting projects designed to enhance regional competitiveness and promote long-term economic development. Also supporting the project is the Kansas Department of Commerce, with the awarding of a$100,000 Workforce Solutions Fund grant. Both of these agencies recognize the need for training to support high-skill, high-wage jobs.

CCC would like to thank everyone that has helped make this project a reality. “We appreciate the support the City of Columbus and Cherokee County personnel have given the project,” commented Cindy Harrold, CCC Columbus Campus Director. “Jim Dahmen, with the Columbus Telephone Company, was instrumental in helping the College find funding. Area residents have offered their expertise to the planning process. It shows a federal, state and city commitment to help bring economic strength to this area. The College currently runs a strong welding program in Coffeyville, so we are excited to bring that opportunity to area residents.” For more information on the new Welding program, or other training programs offered by CCC, contact 620-429-3896.
