Reasoning at CCC Livestock
Judging Camp
Coffeyville Community College (CCC) Livestock
Judging Coaches, Brian Anderson and Cary Crow took 65 youth of 4-H and
FFA ages and taught them the fundamentals of evaluating and reasoning
classes of livestock. Campers came from five states to learn from two
of the best livestock judging coaches in the Midwest. The annual camp is
designed to give youth the opportunity to improve their judging and oral
reasons skills. Campers worked on selection priorities for cattle,
sheep and swine. On Monday the campers judged hogs at Messner Farms in
Caney, Kan. On Tuesday they judged cattle at the Emberson and
Christenson 4-D Ranch in Nowata, Okla. and on Wednesday we judged sheep
at the Hewlett Family Club Lamb operation just outside of Independence,
Kan.
“Our judging camps are one of our very best
recruiting tools,” said Anderson. “They give young students a chance to
see our campus and facilities first hand. They also get a chance to
work with our students and exchange knowledge and information to help
them better their skills. It also gives us a great opportunity to work
with the kids and see if we think they may be a possibility for us to
recruit them to our program in the near future.”
Campers stayed overnight in the new Walker Women’s
Residence Hall at CCC, enjoyed meals in the cafeteria and entertainment
each evening. On Tuesday the group enjoyed putt putt golfing and riding
the train at the park in Independence, Kan. Current CCC Livestock
Judgers helped as counselors and mentors.
“We couldn’t do these camps without the assistance
we receive from our college kids who come back and help with much of the
training of these young people,” said Anderson. “It is good for our
students to set and work with others and they begin to obtain firsthand
knowledge of what it is that maybe they need to do to improve
themselves.”
The second session of the CCC Livestock Judging Camp is June 16-18.
Anderson and Crow are expecting almost 60 students for the second
session. |
