Ravens jet by Air Force Prep with fourth quarter blitzAir Force Prep gave the Coffeyville Red Ravens all they wanted for three quarters, but the Ravens found their stride in the fourth quarter to run away with a 46-26 win on Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs. Kenny Armstrong ran for three touchdowns and Andrew Joseph also recorded a touchdown run to pace the Ravens offense. Edd Noonan added a late touchdown run for Coffeyville. Joseph also shined on special teams for the Ravens, adding a second half field goal and four second half extra points. Air Force Prep, though, gave the Ravens a scare and got on the scoreboard first. Mikil Whittier scored from two yards out on a quarterback keeper to give the Huskies the lead with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. Paul Gaski's extra point put the Huskies up 7-0. The Huskies had a chance to extend the lead with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, but Gaski's 42 yard field goal attempt missed wide left. The Ravens took possession on the Ravens' 32 yard line and mounted a scoring drive. It started with a pass reception by Joseph from quarterback Nick Hardesty that moved the ball into Air Force territory. Benji Love then hauled in a 10 yard pass from Hardesty and that was followed by a nine yard run from Armstrong to the Air Force 32 yard line. Joseph then scampered 32 yards for a touchdown on a run down the left side of the field, reversing his initial direction while in the backfield. Cody Vail's extra point attempt was blocked, keeping the Huskies in the lead, 7-6 with 5:08 remaining in the first half. Air Force Prep would start their next possession from their own 40 yard line after the kickoff went out of bounds. Air Force Prep would take advantage. Whittier hit Chris Thompson with a 24 yard pass to move the ball to the Coffeyville 36 yard line. After another first down to the Coffeyville 26, Air Force Prep was called for a holding penalty which made it first and 20 from the Coffeyville 36. Thompson, though, would haul in a 30 yard pass from Whittier to the Coffeyville six and Mike Dewitt would punch it in on the next play. Gaski's extra point was good, giving Air Force Prep a 14-6 lead with 3:03 left in the first half. The Ravens would cut the Huskies' lead to 14-9 when Joseph connected on a 37 yard field goal attempt with one second left in the half. The big play to set up the scoring drive was a 39 yard pass reception by Deshon Daniels from Hardesty. Air Force Prep would add on to their five point halftime lead early in the third quarter. Air Force Prep received the opening kickoff in the second half and marched down the field, scoring on a Whittier 2 yard quarterback keeper. Gaski's extra point was no good, but the Huskies had a commanding 20-9 lead. "We came out flat in the first half," said Ravens head coach Darian Dulin. "It just took us awhile to get going." If it is a dog eat dog world, the Huskies would be wearing Milk-Bone underwear the rest of the second half. Deshon Daniels would take the ensuing kickoff down to the Huskies' 32 yard line. Armstrong would follow with a two yard run, but a Coffeyville holding penalty would move the ball back the Huskies' 40. Hardesty would connect with Joseph on a 38 yard pass, setting up Armstrong's two yard touchdown run. Joseph made the extra point, cutting the Air Force Prep lead to 20-16. Air Force Prep had a golden opportunity to expand the lead on their next possession, but Gaski misfired on a 30 yard field goal attempt. The Ravens would take the lead on their next possession. Hardesty hit Daniels on a 54 yard pass on a crossing pattern to move the ball to the Huskies' 26 yard line. On a third and six play, Daniels carried the ball 16 yards on a double-reverse to the Air Force Prep 6. Armstrong would score the touchdown on the next play to give the Ravens a 22-20 lead with 3:30 left in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was no good. Air Force Prep would once again march down the field on their next possession, keyed by a 35 yard reception by Thompson and a pair of nice runs by Mike DeWitt. Air Force Prep moved the ball to the six yard line and had a fourth and two play to start the fourth quarter. Instead of trying a field goal that would have given the Huskies a one point lead, they opted to go for a first down or a touchdown. The Ravens defense was up to the task, and stuffed a run attempt at the six yard line and regained the ball on downs. Armstrong would once again highlight another Coffeyville scoring drive. Armstrong would cap off a 94 yard scoring drive with a five yard run for a touchdown. Joseph's extra point was good, giving the Ravens a 29-20 lead. Key plays on the touchdown drive included a 10 yard pass from Hardesty to Tony Karleskint and a 45 yard run by Armstrong. The Raven defense would get in the act. Air Force Prep began the next drive on their own 31 yard line after the kickoff. An illegal formation penalty would push the Huskies back to the 26 yard line. An incomplete pass brought up a second and 15 play. The Ravens' Derek Slaughter would sack Whittier on the Air Force Prep 16 yard line to set up a third down and 25 play. The Ravens would blitz and the Raven defense force Whittier to fumble. Slaughter recovered the fumble in the Air Force Prep end zone for a touchdown. Joseph's extra point gave the Ravens a 36-20 lead and command of the game. The Huskies' next possession started on the Ravens' 46 yard line, taking advantage of a Ravens' excessive celebration penalty following Slaughter's touchdown. The Ravens would sack Whittier on a fourth down play to regain the ball on downs on the Ravens' 40 yard line. Armstrong would once again come up with a big run to the Huskies' 11 yard line. The drive would stall, though, and the Ravens had to settle for a Joseph 31 yard field goal with just over five minutes remaining in the game. However, the 39-20 lead gave the Ravens a three possession cushion. Air Force would score with three minutes remaining on a Thompson pass reception from Whittier, but the extra point attempt was missed, making the score 39-26. The Ravens would put the game away for good with 1:36 left when Edd Noonan scored from 12 yards out. Joseph's extra point would provide the final margin 46-26. "Once the offense got going," said Dulin, "we were able to build on it in the second half." "We've got 46 freshmen and every week is a learning process for them. We're starting to learn you have to play hard every week." In addition to his three touchdown runs, Armstrong rushed for a team high 118 yards and also caught two passes for 28 yards. Daniels gained 71 yards on 10 carries and also caught four balls for 99 yards. Joseph had 52 yards rushing on two carries with a touchdown and 87 yards receiving on seven receptions. Joseph connected on both field goal attempts and also punted three times for a 32 yard average. Benji Love caught two passes for 28 yards. Noonan had two carries for 15 yards. Chris Stuart and Tony Karleskint each caught a pass. Hardesty completed 15 of 21 passes for 252 yards. Jeff Woods came off the bench to complete his only pass for 13 yards. On defense, Nate Brinkley had eight solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Nick Briney had eight solo tackles and two assisted tackles.
