CCC offering DVDs of football games from 1975 to current

Are you a former player or a diehard Red Raven football fan who would love to access footage from favorite games or seasons?  If you are, then you are in luck.

Coffeyville Community College is offering for sale DVDs of any football game since 1975, according to athletic director Jeff Leiker.  The DVDs are produced from converting the old reel type film or VHS tape of original game tape footage to DVD format.  Each game will cost $25 and the fee covers the cost of converting the footage to DVD.

To order a game or several games, please contact Jeff Leiker at 620-252-7147 or via email at jeffl@coffeyville.edu and detail the games you wish to receive.  Coach Leiker will get back in touch with you to verify the order and to arrange payment.

Former Red Raven wide receiver Devin Thomas was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Washington Redskins on April 26.  Thomas, after being redshirted in 2004 at Coffeyville, led the Ravens with 33 receptions for 674 yards in 2005.  Thomas also returned 15 kickoffs for a 22.6 yard average as a Raven in 2005.  He transferred to Michigan State and after playing sparingly his sophomore season in 2006, lit up the Big Ten in 2007.

The second-team All-Big Ten Conference choice set the school single-season record with 79 receptions in 2007. He started all 13 games at flanker, as his 1,260 yards receiving rank third on MSU's annual record list. He had eight touchdown grabs, rushed 27 times for 177 yards (6.6 avg) and averaged 2.6 yards on seven punt returns. He attempted one pass and set a Big Ten single-season record with 1,135 yards on 39 kickoff returns (29.1 avg), as his 2,590 all-purpose yards set a school record.

Brandon JacobsFormer Raven Brandon Jacobs key player for Giants in Super Bowl

Few prognosticators gave the New York Giants much of a chance against the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII on February 3, but the Giants pulled off a huge upset.  The Giants' win made a Super Bowl Champion of former Red Raven running back Brandon Jacobs.  Jacobs, who played for the Ravens in 2001 and 2002, rushed for 1,009 yards in 12 regular season games for the Giants in 2007.  Jacobs rushed for an additional 155 yards in three playoff games and ran for 42 yards in the Super Bowl victory.  Jacobs had a stellar career at CCC.  A two-year starter for the Ravens, Jacobs rushed for 1,151 yards in 2001 and for 1,881 yards in 2002.  He scored 36 career touchdowns at CCC.  Jacobs played at Auburn in 2003 before transferring to Southern Illinois University for his senior season in 2004.  He was a fifth round draft pick by the Giants in the 2005 NFL draft.

Story of the Raven

Legend has it that Melvin Drake, a sports reporter for The Coffeyville Journal in 1925, called the football team the “Ravens” because they were so lean in their winnings.  Later, Shorty Crone, Journal sports editor, said the Ravens were red faced over their losses.  Thus, the name Red Ravens.  True or not, no one seems to know for sure, but the College Dial, a former CCC magazine, vouched for the story in two different editions in 1948 and 1956.  The official Red Raven used today was drawn in 1946 by CCC alumnus Dale Misch, who now lives in Fort Worth, Texas.
