Andy Morgan selected as Red Ravens Head Baseball Coach
Morgan has served as the assistant baseball coach the previous two seasons before being named head coach taking over the program from former head coach Ryan McCune who has moved to the head softball coach position at the college. Morgan played at Cowley County before transferring to Park University (Parkville, Mo.), where he finished his playing career and received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Marketing. “I’m happy to have the chance to be a head coach,” said Morgan. “Coach McCune started a good thing with the baseball program and I have to keep it going and try to build on it and get into the elite class, not only in the Jayhawk Conference, but junior college baseball period.” Since Morgan has been an assistant and had a hand in recruiting most of the players on the roster, the transition should be relatively seamless for Morgan and the players. “Things will be different just because Coach McCune and I are different guys, but it won’t be a huge change,” said Morgan. “We didn’t lose anybody this summer and we’re excited about the new kids coming in; they’re good players and good students.” Morgan will have the additional task of completing some flood recovery projects at Walter Johnson Field on Coffeyville’s east side. “We have our field back and that’s key; it gives us a home,” said Morgan. “We still need to work on getting some equipment and a locker facility.” Other projects Morgan wants to tackle at the field include installing a brick bottom and net backstop, outdoor batting cages at the field, and an indoor facility to work out in during the off-season. The baseball team will begin practices once school starts on August 14. The team will also play several scrimmage games during the fall. “We lay the foundation and ground work on how we are going to do things, so come spring time they understand what is expected,” said Morgan. Morgan will have Daniel Dulin as one of his assistants for the upcoming school year. Daniel is the younger brother of Darian Dulin, the head football coach at CCC. “I’m going to bring in another assistant who is a known and good recruiter,” said Morgan. “We’re going to go out and recruit hard and bring in the best players around.” Morgan seeks to build a balanced team. “I want to do it all,” said Morgan. “I want to run and play the small game, but I also want to hit and drive runs in,” said Morgan. “We will be able to pitch and play defense and really concentrate on the fundamentals of everything.” Achieving that balance will be necessary for the Ravens to compete in the upper-echelon of the competitive Jayhawk Conference. “That is what we want to do,” said Morgan. |
